George Stephenson was a product of the North East hot bed of football. He was a speedy winger who packed a terrific shot. Started his career at Durham City before moving to Aston Villa in 1931. He made his debut for Villa on January 16th 1932, scoring once in a 6-1 win over Liverpool. He played the following week but never got into the first team again. George then moved to Luton in the Summer of 1934, and became an instant hit after making his debut in a 1-1 draw at home to Southend United on the opening day of the 1934/35 season. He made the left wing position his own, missing only 13 matches in five seasons, which just underlined his consistancy. He was certainly the finest winger to play for The Town during the inter war years, not only being the creator of goals, but a goalscorer in his own right. Indeed in his five seasons at Kenilworth Road hit hit double figures for the season four times. The highlight being the Division 3 South Championship winning season in 1936/37 when he scored 17 which included a hat-trick in the 8-1 win over Cardiff City on January 2nd 1937. By the time war broke out in September 1939 he was the longest serving player at the club, and like so many others the war curtailed his career, although he did still turn out for the club in some war time matches.
