A bold and powerful centre forward who was signed from Barnsley in 1913. In his first season he scored 28 goals in 24 appearances as The Town won promotion from The Southern League Division 2. After one season in Division 1 the The First World War broke out and Simms like many others either had their careers ended or interrupted for some four years. After being wounded whilst serving in the army in Italy he recovered and continued his football career in 1919. And the goals continued to flow, he scored 28 in the 1920/21 season as The Town returned to the Football League for the first time since 1900. His form alerted the England team selectors and he won an England cap, playing against Ireland on October 22nd 1921. Facing him that day in the Irish side were Luton team mates Allan Mathieson and Louis Bookman. In March 1922 he left Luton and joined his home town club South Shields who were at that time a respectable Division 2 team. Once his days as a professional footballer were over he settled in Luton and played for the Vauxhall Motors works team, and later managed them.
