Hugh McGinngle spent three seasons playing for Falkirk before heading south to join Luton in 1930. A regular in the first team for four seasons following his arrival, and like Reg Kingham was an ever present in the 1932/33 FA Cup run. Not known for his goalscoring he netted a vital equaliser in the 1st Round replay against Kingstonian which The Town eventually won 3-2. Described as a fine defender with endless stamina he eventually lost his place following the arrival of Billy Thayne and later Jack Nelson. It looked as though his Luton career was over at the end of the 1935/36 season when he retired. However he was called out of retirement to play a cameo role in the promotion season of 1936/37 when The Town suffered a mini injury crisis
