| Tommy Hodgson, a former coalminer, this rugged full back served West Ham United during the 1920`s, and would have played many more matches there if it had not been for illness and injury. Indeed he made only 87 appearances in nine seasons at West Ham.He joined "The Hammers" from Hetton Colliery in 1921, making his debut in the final match of the 1921/22 season. He then moved to Luton in 1930 making his debut in a 0-0 draw at Swindon Town on October 25th. In moving to Luton he teamed up once again with former West Ham colleague George Kay who was Luton`s manager at the time. After three seasons at Kenilworth Road injury forced him to retire. But that was far from the end of his association with the club. He settled in the area, going into the licensed trade trade where he was mine host at The Warden Tavern. Soon after the Second World War he was elected onto the Board of Directors at the club. Over the years he progressed to Managing Director, Chairman and eventually to President. He even stood in as Manager when The Town reached the FA Cup Final in 1959. Luton were without a manager at the time, and he was given the honour of leading the team onto the field that day. Having been player and captain, he holds a unique record in English football in carrying out so many different roles for one club. He was still a frequent visitor to Kenilworth Road until moving away from the area in 1984 | ||
