| A Glasgow born former shipyard worker Joe Coen arrived at Kenilworth Road at the beginning of the 1934/35 season from Bournemouth. He quickly replaced the erratic former Arsenal keeper Charlie Preedy and made his debut his debut in a 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on September 15th 1934. He then made 73 consecutive appearances until losing his place to Bill Dolman towards the end of the 1935/36 season. Dolman then more or less kept hold of the keepers jersey for almost a year as The Town marched towards promotion at the end of the 1936/37 season. But Coen came back into the side for the last 10 vital matches on the run in as promotion and the championship was clinched with a 2-0 home win over Torquay United on the last day of the season. But with only 12 appearances he did not qualify for a Championship Medal. Over the next two seasons both Coen and Dolman shared the goalkeeping duties. Then came the war, and like so many other players that was the end of their careers. Sadly in some cases, including that of Joe Coen it would cost them their lives too. Coen along with three other players who were on Luton`s books as war broke out also lost their lives. They were Charlie Clark, James Gillespie and Charles Ladd, who was killed when HMS Hwas sunk by The Bismark. All four memorialized on a plaque which is situated in the Century Club at Kenilworth Road | ||
