| Had it tnot have been for the interruption of World War Two, Billington would almost certainly have become a big favourite with The Town supporters for his scoring feats as his predecessor in the number nine shirt Joe Payne. He was certainly the big star in the local amateur ranks. Although born in Ampthill he was brought up in Luton. His early football days started with Christchurch School, then Luton Schoolboys. He moved into senior football playing for Luton Cocoa Works, Chapel Street Methodists and finally to Waterlows. At Waterlows he helped them to win The Spartan League Championship in 1935/36 and in 1937/38, when he scored no fewer than 80 goals. It was this that led The Town to offering him a professional contract on May 21st 1938. But they had to move in fast, as it was stronmgly rumoured a leading Division 1 club was keen on signing him too. After proving himself in the reserves in the early part of the 1938/39 season he was given his league debut on November 5th at Tranmere Rovers | ||
